Hi everyone! I’m hoping to catch up soon on some other important updates here, but I did want to be sure I included information on the upcoming Security BSides Conference, coinciding with RSA 2010 in San Francisco. If you’re interested in the event, you NEED TO VOTE FOR THE TOPICS you wish to see.

The Skinny on BSides
If you’re not familiar with Security BSides, here’s your two minute overview. It’s a mini-conference of alternative content collocated and/or co-hosted with another security conference. So far, Security BSides has seen much success and I’m excited to watch it grow! The first Security BSides in Las Vegas (with Defcon) included speakers such as HD Moore, Mike Kershaw, Damon Cortesi and a dozen others (including myself).  For more information, read my original post from inaugural Las Vegas  Security BSides.

Security B-Sides San Francisco

Where: pariSoma, 1436 Howard St. (at 10th), San Francisco, CA 94113

Talks I’m Involved With
Although I’m not offering up the “Catching the Unicorn” talk on Network Access Control this time, I am participating on two panels that are up for submission:

  • Ruffled Feathers Panel with Erin Jacobs, Andrew Hay and company
The Ruffled Feathers panel is a continuation of the BSides Las Vegas Feathers Will Fly discussion where we invited the audience to delve into the gender issues of women in the IT and security industry. It’s an eye-opening and engaging discussion that I’m honored to be a part of!

    .
  • The Password Panel (shortened name) with Michael Santarcangelo and Marisa Fagan
This ‘so what’s the alternative’ talk is something I’m really excited about. Marisa, Michael and I also share rather passionate feelings about the use, or MISUSE, of passwords and identification, both in daily life and the world of infosec. This panel proves to be an engaging discussion, dissecting  breaches and exploitation of passwords and exploring both how we could have prevented them with the options available today as well as future alternatives for passwords and authentication in general.

Voting for Talks – NOW
Those interested in presenting at Security BSides San Fran have posted their talk abstracts on the BSides site. Attendees are asked to vote for the submissions they’d like to have included. Most votes are submitted via twitter. Last year the talks were videoed and made available to the public afterwards. While it helps to vote if you’re attending, you may also get something out of it if you cannot attend, from the video content.

Steps for voting

  1. 1. Read the list of proposed talks at the Bsides SF Talks page
  2. 2. If you’re attending, add your name to the Participants List at BSides SF
  3. 3. Vote on Twitter by tweeting: @SecurityBSides I vote for <TOPIC> by @<NAME> #BSidesSF
