Everyone asks, “what are some ways people can try mindfulness?” The answer is that there are volumes of books on just this topic, but if you’re new to cultivating and applying mindfulness, and you’ve never had formal meditation instruction, then here are three uber-easy ways to get

3 Ways to Try Mindfulness Today

started right now. I’m presenting these in the context of our lives in tech and information security but (obviously) they can be used by all.

Learning to apply mindfulness is about building a toolset, trying out different tools, and evaluating their impact and your own personal results. Not every tool works equally for each person. These 3 are basic building blocks and tools that can be applied by anyone.

Today I joined Michael Santarcangelo and Paul Asadoorian on Business Security Weekly to talk about life, love, and the pursuit of happiness. Or, maybe mindfulness, leadership, Buddhism, Cyber Patriot, and applying mindfulness to powerlifting. It was definitely a mixed bag, but a thoroughly entertaining time. Hope you enjoy the show!

You can see more new mindfulness-based leadership content at my session at InfoSec World CISO Leadership Summit this March.

It’s been more than a year since I’ve given you a meaningful blog post, and I made a commitment today to change that. Actually, I made the commitment three years ago to do that, and I’m finally acting on it. I’m made some other commitments, including presenting leadership and mindfulness content and conferences at the request of several professional friends, colleagues, and event managers. (more…)

3 Books that Changed My Life: Reading Lists from Infosec Pros

My goals for the year mean some drastic changes to the type of content you’re used to seeing from me. One of these goals is to highlight the human aspect of professionals in information security — to demonstrate the depth of personality, the breadth of interest and accomplishment, and to explore the forces which make us who we are.

In this first series, I asked my infosec colleagues to share 3 books that changed their lives. The results were astounding and the responses very heart-felt. This topic evoked passion and an openness that led me to change the format from a single article to a multi-post piece, highlighting each security professional’s pick3 books changed my lifes in his/her own feature.

The idea is to share what makes us who we are, not for the purposes of emulation, but to open our eyes and minds to the bigger picture by thinking outside the infosec box in which we’re so often enclosed. For this piece, I tried to select a cross-section of the industry and people I thought would be comfortable stepping outside of the normal boundaries of technology content.

The only guidance I offered was that they were to pick three books which changed their life, and explain why/how they were impacted. It was made clear the book content could be on any topic. I wasn’t disappointed, and I hope you’ll feel the same.

With that, let me introduce the the first mini-series of the year.

  1. Bill Brenner: 3 Books that Changed My Life
  2. Illena Armstrong: 3 Books that Changed My Life
  3. Dave Kennedy: 3 Books that Changed My Life
  4. Jack Daniel: 3 Books that Changed My Life
  5. unveiled soon…

Calling All Infosec Curmudgeons at RSA

Well, that time is finally here, and in just a few days, Mike Rothman and I will be taking the stage at RSA 2014, in a room that seats 520 attendees, to discuss a topic never before breached at a security conference thus far. That’s 520 hearts and minds we have the opportunity to influence, but our goals aren’t so lofty. If we can open up just a handful of minds, that would be an amazingly gratifying experience. In fact, if the information we offer reaches just ONE of our infosec colleagues and offers a him or her a better life, well then, we’ll mark it as a success!

Realizing the descriptions provided in the booklets, and even online, are minimalist, (I guess that’s what’s expected at an event with 25+ tracks, hundreds of speakers and thousands of sessions) we thought you might like to know a little more about our strange little session on neurohacking and mindfulness. Specifically, we’ve received several questions about the appropriate colors of crystals to bring, and whether there will be Tarot cards available at the door. As it turns out, you guys are really funny, but there are no crystals or Tarot cards. Good one, though; that was very clever. (more…)
