A Better Blog… Coming Up!

It’s that time- we need more ‘stuff’!

Once upon a time…
When I first started this blog, I wasn’t quite sure what would happen… where it would go… or even if I could keep finding enough new things to talk about. I haven’t had a problem finding topics, only the time to write them all!

Point being, when I started the blog, I began with a hosted solution – Squarespace. My blog host is not free, but has provided a nice platform for me to get started and easily maintain the site, posts and reporting.

Having been in the web development business for years, I know what’s involved in maintaining a site and really didn’t want to throw myself back into all that. However, the time has come. We need more ‘stuff’ and to get all the fun stuff we want I’m going to need to make some drastic changes in the platform.

What’s getting added…
Soon you’re going to have a better blog site to enjoy. The changes will provide easier and better comment and collaboration systems, more capable search tools and email forms, a blog roll and better methods for linking and trackbacks. The changes will also allow me to modify the domain host records so we can access the site without the “www”, a specific request by some, namely ‘the Wilde’.

Overall, I hope the changes will give you the tools to better use the site, find the content you want and have the ability to make it ‘your’ community and a place for interaction and idea exchange.

I’ll keep you posted through the changes and hope you’ll hang in there. The content is/will/should all be the same and will be transferred in its entirety. It will be a process so you may not see any changes for a bit. It’s important the new site is up and functioning before anything is replaced.

Also, I’ll be looking for your feedback of what you like and don’t like!

I’m excited :)

Well, I had a few people email to ask how/if they could subscribe to receive blog posts via email as they’re posted. And the answer was: I thought that function was already there.

The reality was, the function was there, and I could see it in my admin view, but it was not enabled for public viewing. (doh!) Don’t I feel like a dork.

So, the email subscription is now enabled and functioning and can be found in the left (now right) navigation on my blog. Email feeds are provided by Feedburner, so your information is kept safe with them and is never shared with anyone else.

More ‘good’ stuff comin’ soon!

Women in IT: A Note from the Non-Booth-Babe Blogger

Okay Alan! Your blog this morning  has cracked me up, I’ve definitely had a good giggle from it. I have to say though, I’m surprised, amused and embarrassed all at the same time. Blonde- yes, Blogger- yes… not sure about the other parts!

I may disagree on the photo comment. First of all, it’s really bad. Secondly, I’ve emailed responses to several of my readers’ comments and (much to my surprise) found they didn’t realize I was ‘a girl’. Shocking right? When they saw ‘Jennifer’ in my email signature they figured it out. So, I don’t know that the photo has any impact on readership, but I could be wrong. However, if you do read my blog because I’m female and you like the photo- I’m okay with that- you’ll still learn something ;)

Note to self: I definitely have to do something about that horrible photo! I’ve been procrastinating for a while and searching for a photographer and stylist to get some new ‘real’ head shots taken. I hate having my photo taken, so I’ll keep you posted on that.

Women in IT…

The timing of your post is amazing as well. Over the past couple of weeks I’ve received several emails from fellow women in IT who wanted to make a connection, swap stories and find a commerad-ess, or two, in the world. I’ve even received postcards and written notes from thoughtful ladies who found my information online. I guess I never realized what a struggle some women have in the ‘man’s world’ of IT. I’m starting to realize it more, as I meet new friends and hear their war stories of moving up and gaining respect in the industry.

I’ve been lucky- I grew up in the IT industry and somehow managed to circumvent a lot of the ‘gender issues’. When I was about 16, I developed and taught computer and Internet-related courseware, and had to teach it to adults (and yes, they’re actually worse than the 2nd graders!) Around that same time, I was sitting on a state agency board as a SME on web usage and development.

I was young and a female (and blonde), so I most certainly had to prove myself and establish a repertoire to gain the respect of my peers; mostly middle-aged and older men who had been in the industry longer than I’d been alive.

Knowing what you don’t know…

Getting thrown in early certainly taught me valuable lessons. I made sure I knew my stuff inside and out, and conversely, I made sure I was comfortable asking questions on topics I didn’t know about. Part of the respect comes from ‘knowing what you don’t know’ and being able to admit it. I think I’m pretty good at that and it’s carried me far. :)   Plus, I had two great role models to learn from.

However it happened- through some combination of luck and hard work- I’m happy to be where I am. Our customers, partners and colleagues look to me for answers and insight. I know they trust me and and that’s an amazing feeling. It’s also what drives me to be the best at what I do, and to keep learning, studying and working at it.

They’ve given me their trust, and I try really hard to give them something back that’s equally as important.

Yes, and No

I’ve received a lot of nice emails over the past week or so and I hope to respond to everyone. So, in short- I wanted to say Yes, I’m still alive and No, I didn’t fall off the face of the Earth.

I’m usually on the road, but the past several weeks have been especially gruesome, intermingled with various professional and personal travel and time commitments, many lasting until the weeee hours of the morning. I’m perched again for about 72 hours and have some more things to share over the next few days.

Thanks for sticking with me!
