The first major conference I’ll be speaking at in 2009 is the Infosec World 2009, put on by Misti and surrounded by a host of additional summits, trainings and workshops. (more…)

I promised in 2009 I’d be a better blogger and I haven’t followed through on that quite yet, but hang in there. While I’ve been ‘not’ blogging, I have been working on a variety of customer projects, labs, getting our new engineers up to speed, running beta tests for partners and working out the upcoming calendar for presentations and speaking engagements.

Sure- they take away from blog-time, but It’s all these fun things that give me the ammunition for good blogs and while I have a LOT of them rattling around in my head, for the past several months, I’ve had just enough time to jot the gist down on a scratch pad before heading out to tackle the next ’emergency’.

So what have I been doing? Well to start, during Q4 of 2008 and January of this year, our company hired three more engineers, an account manager and communications/marketing manager along with a couple of internal support personnel. Now instead of just keeping up with what I’m working on, I’ve been tasked with managing the majority of engineering resources and projects. You’ll probably hear more about the new hires and additional projects we’re taking on soon.

In addition to that, we’ve been running tests, betas and lab configurations for a variety of products from our partners. Again, when it’s time I’ll share more information on that. For now most information is on NDA. This is some of the fun stuff I get to do… pounding away on products in a lab without the reprocussions of a production environment is like being able to draw all over your Mom’s white walls with Crayons. There’s something terribly fulfilling about it.

Of course I’m also working on materials for 2009 talks on the new (upcoming) 802.1X-Revision, which will have a huge impact on how organizations (especially government and enterprise) will design wired and wireless networks from here forward.

Outside of my regular duties at work, I’m very active in ISSA and was tapped to be the Chapter Development Chair and work with a team to carry out projects, trainings, membership outreach and special programs. That’s been going well and in January and February (so far) we’ve run recovery programs and reconnected with about 20% of past members, created a Raleigh ISSA Facebook community and are working on website and communications upgrades.

I’ve also been working out the 2009 schedule for conferences and speaking engagements. Obviously It’s only February 8th, so events past summer-ish are still not completely baked.

For now, here are some of the places you can find me…

I know… I know… You can yell at me via comments or email… I’ve been a bad blogger…
again.  :(

A flurry of conferences intertwined with customer emergencies have taken me ‘out of pocket’ for the past month or so.

You know it’s serious when I have to cancel my trip to INTEROP… I’m traumatized by that, btw.

What have I been doing?

The Conferences… Well, after the ILTA Conference in Texas (the hotel was gorgeous, by the way), I returned on a Tuesday evening only to be diverted directly to a customer site for the remainder of the week. After that, a few con calls and customer meetings, followed by SCITDA in South Carolina where I delivered a ‘Network Security Trends’ talk and participated on a Security Panel (with McAfee, Juniper, Cisco and others) later in the conference.

The Other House… As soon as I returned from SCITDA, the next few days were spent over-seeing the replacement windows going into the rental property. A few windows here, some sheetrock there, more painting than I really cared to do… and we were in business.

It’s been an on-going project… Over the past year, the house has been completely repainted (inside and out), all the hardware (doorknobs, fixtures) as well as lighting and outlets/switches replaced.  The master bath was redone with new tile and a new vanity with custom bowl sink and faucet. In addition, the third-acre lot was mostly cleared- from ‘couldn’t-see-the-back-fence’ to ‘wow-there’s sun-light’.  The dark (ugly) wood floor-to-ceiling fireplace surround was removed and sheetrock put up. After a guy ran over (and crushed) the draining system, that had to be replaced also (I have a friend to thank for redoing that, I wouldn’t have known where to start). Oh and, last month the roof was redone too, making the windows the last major project for a while (I hope). The roof and windows were the only parts contracted out… if that gives you any idea as to the volume of work I’ve done on the house. Maybe I’ll share some before and after photos…

And now, I still have more customer projects to complete, more product evaluations and reviews to write and of course… more conferences coming up. Plus, I have a sink to fix and a water heater to drain… (uggg).

Next on the list is SecTor… more on that soon.

So, while I probably could have found 5-10 minutes to write something, the days have been long and tiring. The chances of an even mildly-coherent post were slim to none (at best).

RSA 2008- 50 Pages of Intrigue & Sex

I’m flipping through the RSA 2008 session selection booklet, marking what I’d like to attend, and realizing I’ll need 2 more of me to make even 70% of what I marked.

Okay, so maybe there aren’t quite 50 pages of intrigue, some are vendor pitches in disguise… but there are at least 30-some anyway… still a big hydrant and a little cup.

I think the plan is to go in early for the weekend and start the learning by osmosis early. There are a couple of pre-conference courses I’d like to attend, but that just may be a little too much in one week.

I’m entertained by the number of sessions that contain ‘sex’… not something expected from a conference catered to the geekiest of us. Okay, I exaggerated again- I did a search on the interactive catalogue and there are only 2 ‘sex’ sessions- but I suppose that’s more than enough for RSA…

I’m excited to attend this year, out of all the conferences I’ve had the pleasure of attending, I’ve yet to make it to RSA, so this is my first. There are plenty of extra-curricular activities, parties and social times and I’m especially looking forward to meeting the rest of the Security Bloggers Network crowd.

Hope to see you there too!
