Poof* and I’m Back Again

I know… I know… You can yell at me via comments or email… I’ve been a bad blogger…
again.  :(

A flurry of conferences intertwined with customer emergencies have taken me ‘out of pocket’ for the past month or so.

You know it’s serious when I have to cancel my trip to INTEROP… I’m traumatized by that, btw.

What have I been doing?

The Conferences… Well, after the ILTA Conference in Texas (the hotel was gorgeous, by the way), I returned on a Tuesday evening only to be diverted directly to a customer site for the remainder of the week. After that, a few con calls and customer meetings, followed by SCITDA in South Carolina where I delivered a ‘Network Security Trends’ talk and participated on a Security Panel (with McAfee, Juniper, Cisco and others) later in the conference.

The Other House… As soon as I returned from SCITDA, the next few days were spent over-seeing the replacement windows going into the rental property. A few windows here, some sheetrock there, more painting than I really cared to do… and we were in business.

It’s been an on-going project… Over the past year, the house has been completely repainted (inside and out), all the hardware (doorknobs, fixtures) as well as lighting and outlets/switches replaced.  The master bath was redone with new tile and a new vanity with custom bowl sink and faucet. In addition, the third-acre lot was mostly cleared- from ‘couldn’t-see-the-back-fence’ to ‘wow-there’s sun-light’.  The dark (ugly) wood floor-to-ceiling fireplace surround was removed and sheetrock put up. After a guy ran over (and crushed) the draining system, that had to be replaced also (I have a friend to thank for redoing that, I wouldn’t have known where to start). Oh and, last month the roof was redone too, making the windows the last major project for a while (I hope). The roof and windows were the only parts contracted out… if that gives you any idea as to the volume of work I’ve done on the house. Maybe I’ll share some before and after photos…

And now, I still have more customer projects to complete, more product evaluations and reviews to write and of course… more conferences coming up. Plus, I have a sink to fix and a water heater to drain… (uggg).

Next on the list is SecTor… more on that soon.

So, while I probably could have found 5-10 minutes to write something, the days have been long and tiring. The chances of an even mildly-coherent post were slim to none (at best).

Another J! True Story   (yes, with a typo in the title ;)

Yesterday, the emails and group posts were flying around like crazy. Our little neighborhood has a private Yahoo Group for residents to communicate and connect- I’ve been overjoyed to have the online venue and it certainly proved useful these past couple of days.

We live at the end of a cul de sac, with a lovely wooded area occupying the space past our fenced-in back yard. Past the woods is a main street they’re in the process of widening. (I know, grrreeat). A couple of weekends ago, two adult men (who were obviously out of place) came up behind our house out of those woods. Our lab/rottie mix (who looks like a full Rottweiler) took notice and wasn’t happy.

So, as any good dog owner would do in that situation… I let her out to have at it. The yard is fenced, so there was no danger of anyone (them or her) getting hurt. But- it was enough to scare the crap out of them and their lackadaisical walk quickly turned into a swift gait the other direction. I couldn’t help but giggle a little.

Mission Accomplished. For now anyway.

I didn’t think much about it until yesterday when my inbox lit up with posts to our online neighborhood group. It seems there have been several similarly suspicious situations (say that 3 times fast) occurring at various times of the day and night in our little corner of Earth. Mostly, what we (the neighborhood) deemed a childish prank has now turned into a full blown ‘security’ issue. (You knew that word was coming!)

It started with harmless prank doorbell-ringing, but the offense list has grown to include instances of beating and kicking doors in the wee hours of the morning. Other neighbors have noted recent instances of someone coming onto their back deck and tapping on the back door, only to have disappeared before the home owners could make it downstairs. Each time the culprit takes off if -or before- the occupant can respond. There have been only a couple of partial-sightings, where another neighbor caught a glimpse of the incident, and it has been confirmed that these are not kids. From the posts yesterday from a handful of folks, I’d say there were at least a dozen or so instances already documented.

So that leads me to wonder… are they merely childish pranks… or are these adults scoping out a neighborhood and testing to see who’s home… ?

Either way, midnight window-tapping and 3:00am kicks at your front door (which evidently left dents) are nothing to dismiss. We’re asking the local Police Department to increase the frequency of their drive-thrus in the area. And, I’m thinking of having the group organize a neighborhood camera system.

For now, our 75-pound, four-legged black and tan security system helps me feel a little better about it all.

Yes- I’m a Dancer

And no, not that kind. For some strange reason, in the past 6 weeks or so, there seems to be a great interest in my long-time hobby. An uncanny number of customers, partners and colleagues recently have either stumbled upon online competition results or chatted about it in passing. Everyone asks me about it…

So- Yes- I’m a Dancer. In recent years, I’ve been most active in West Coast Swing and Ballroom, but my dance habit started long ago and far away, when I was a wee lass taking the obligatory ballet class. There were a few detours- it wasn’t long before I traded in the ballet slippers for a gymnastics leotard… and after I mastered the balance beam, I traded up (well, or just traded) for pom-pons. Yep, I was a cheerleader from middle school up, but it wasn’t all prissy-pants. My high school years I also busted butt on the Track Team, running sprints and (believe it or not) hurdles and jumps.

Finally I came back around and took a Called Ballroom Dance Class at my high school. It was more reminiscent of square dancing- steps were called aloud and we did them in unison. In my excitement I dragged our entire hall to the class, so of course we were short on ‘gents. To ease the mismatch, I learned the guys part and suddenly the world of dance was my playground.

I knew I wanted to learn more ballroom, but I actually began my competitive dance life with Shag (Carolina Shag, in case you’re reading from Europe ;) ). During those years, I had the pleasure of working with several Shag hall-of-famers and really came to love the people and culture of the dance- I’d later learn there’s no other like it.

Ballroom was still in the back of my head, and when my previous partner and I split up, I exited the Shag scene for a long time and found myself in a ballroom studio. It’s hard to have relationships in, around and with the dance world, so often my dancing caused issues and it was during one of those times that I took another break. Eventually I jumped back on the horse and did a little competitive American Ballroom. Everyone looks so snooty on tv, but most of the ballroom crowd is fun, crazy and quirky and I had a blast in the studio lessons, parties and at comps. We could go anywhere, any time and dance to any music.

One of my good friends at the time was also dabbling in various dances, and he dragged me on the floor to try some West Coast Swing one night. I sucked. It was horrible. All my Shag training had me instinctively doing everything I shouldn’t be doing in Swing, and the two dances were so close I couldn’t get out of the rut. After a No-Shag time, and some great coaching, I finally got it and I went in head first! I found myself competing at events, dance captain of a local team and dancing on another semi-pro competitive team. I was Swingin’ 8 nights a week!

During this time I experimented with other dances, including some Belly Dancing, Lindy and a touch of Balboa. (Don’t tell anyone, but I even competed in some Country/Western divisions… boots an’ all.) They’re all great and I encourage everyone to try it- especially if it’s been a burning secret desire. There’s no magic to it- if you practice a lot you’ll be good- if you don’t practice a lot, learn it socially and you’ll have a blast at clubs and parties.

I’ve met a lot of people through dancing, many of whom I consider my closest friends. My work schedule doesn’t always allow for frolicking on the dance floor (you don’t get your CISSP and Master ASE in 6 months if you’re dancing 24/7).

So these days, I have to squeeze it in when I can, but it’s one of the few things I’d never trade. I’ve come full circle and make it my adult ballet classes when possible (FYI, the leotards were much cuter in size 2 pink). There’s something wonderful about the freedom and creativity of dance… and being able to enjoy the experience with so many friends.
