Great Service from Network World

I was so impressed by the personal attention and quick response from Network World’s customer service department, I feel compelled to acknowledge it publicly and send a ‘thank you’ to their team.

Monday morning, just one business day after my pining post last Thursday night (remember Friday was a holiday), I received a call from an extremely helpful and courteous lady in the customer service department. Evidently someone does actually read my blog and had forwarded the post to NWW.

Not only did she help me get fixed up with my regular delivery, she placed the current week’s edition in the mail for me- special delivery!

And I’m greatly thankful, since this week’s cover is sporting the 10Gig Shootout, which highlights the HP ProCurve 3500 stackables. Although, I have to note, on the print cover, the photos aren’t next to the vendor descriptions. Just in case you were wondering, the ProCurve switch came in a very strong second, .03 of a point off I believe, and about half the price (and lifetime warranty). Sorry had to slip that in there too. Check out the scorecard at NWW.

So, thanks to whomever forwarded the post to NWW, and a special thanks for the quick help from their customer support!

RSA Blogger Buzz & Anticipation

Well, I’m getting more and more excited about the upcoming Security Bloggers Meetup at RSA.

I’ve had the distinct pleasure of having a brief run-in with Alan Shimel and Ryan Russell just this week, so I can cross them off my ‘yet to meet’ list and add them to the ‘looking forward to seeing again’ list.

With my recent addition of (and addiction to) Twitter, I’ve had the opportunity to chat and swap semi-meaningless banter with a variety of other SBN members, especially the ‘glue’ of the event, Jennifer Leggio, and some of the main ‘characters’… a fitting term I’d say… including Martin McKeayThe Hoffmeister,  Rich Mogull, Ryan Naraine, Mister Brad Feld, the second Jack Daniel I now know, plus our recently-crowned greatest live-tweeter ever- Ben J and several others- I’m still learning who’s who and who’s going to the Meetup at RSA. Sorry if I’ve missed anyone, but please hop on the SBN site and check out the latest blogs and member links.

You’ll definitely be seeing more info and updates from me as we get closer to RSA, and I plan to try and blog regularly while there to let you all know what shenangians are going on. Until then, here’s a little more info to stay in the loop!

Want to know more? You can find more blog links on SBN and a fit-to-twit list at (the other) Jennifer’s Security Twit post.

Want to watch the event Live? If you’re a regular reader of my blog, or any of the other SBN group, you’ll get a chance to join us virtually. Evidently they (or I guess ‘we’) will be streaming live with conferencing and video blogs. Check this link for details on live event streams. Guaranteed to be entertaining!

NAC’s Polymorphic Paradigm

The recent post on ‘What’s holding back NAC’ elicited some great replies, both public and private. One comment, from Todd over at Napera brought up a great point regarding the ‘origins’ of NAC as we know it.

While all the innovative start-ups were working steadily on a new generation of security solutions, a majority of the industry’s big dogs jumped on the NACwagon, riding the buzzwords by simply re-branding a current technology as NAC. (more…)

My New Shirt

I hopped online the other day to order some more retractable RJ45 cables (LOVE those!) when I saw this shirt I had to certifiedshirt.JPGhave. If you’ve read some of my other posts, you may know I get hit up constantly to ‘help’ with computer ‘stuff’… everything from web sites… to photo editing… to anti-virus.

In case you can’t read it from the goofy photo, it says:

Yes, I am certified.
No, I will not fix your computer.

So, I thought this shirt was appropriate and it made me laugh. Plus, it’s super-soft too!

Hotel’s Dirty Drinks

.. and I don’t mean Martinis.

I’m frequently in hotels. And I’m frequently drinking water. It’s usually room-temperature tap water, so when I started noticing funny tastes and smells in hotel room glasses, it got me wondering exactly how they clean and replace those in-room glasses.

Over the past several weeks I took a mental survey of housekeeping carts. (I frequently sneak an extra shampoo or conditioner at some point, so I’ve usually spent a bit of time exploring the carts, and what’s on them.) I thought about it and realized I’ve never seen glasses (clean or dirty) on any housekeeping carts…. hmm…. they’re not changing them out… so how are they cleaning the glasses?

I was getting ready to post a blog asking just that question when I did a search online and confirmed my worst suspicions. Looks like there’s a nation-wide coup over just this very topic, after numerous TV news ‘stings’ with hidden cameras. On the first search page, I found such video from LA, Maryland and Atlanta, and saw links to several other postings.

If you’re curious… check out some of the findings… I’ll warn you though, in more than one video, there’s a glove, toilet swishing and then glass-cleaning… same glove. (uggggh)

  • News in Atlanta – link
  • ABC 2 in Maryland – link
  • ABC 7 in LA – link

I think I’ll have to start packing my own bottles… the only dirty drink I want comes with gin and olives. ;)
